Sayyidah Fatima Bint Ali Al Said Mosque, Seeb, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman

Sayyidah Fatima Bint Ali Al Said Mosque, Seeb, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman.
Winner in GRC Awards 2023.
Category 1: Best use of GRC in a new build project with Classical Architectural Design.

Glass Reinforced Concrete (GRC) was integral part of Sayyidah Fatima Bin Ali Al Said Mosque, showcasing its effectiveness in classical architectural design. GRC offers versatility, durability, and strength, making it an ideal material for this project.

The intricate arches, column capitals, ceiling and domes featured in the mosque's design were created using GRC. The material's flexibility enabled the designers to achieve the desired classical aesthetic while maintaining necessary structural integrity. GRC's strength was also essential in creating the detailed ornamentation adorning the mosque's walls.

The project faced challenges associated with achieving completion within 6 to 8 month with such large quantum of classical architectural design scope. While the Mosque construction started, the GRC designs, mould making and production were on going in tandem, thus minimizing in situ works allowing achieving such tight schedule.

GRC was chosen due to its many advantages, Main being off site production saving valuable construction time and through colors using pigments avoiding in situ painting. This mosque exemplifies how traditional construction techniques can be augmented by modern materials.

In conclusion, the use of GRC in the construction of this Mosque showcases its potential in achieving complex classical architectural design within short period time to perfection.
